australian animals: literacy for kindy & new eal/d students
Choose and Australian animal, write its name on the IWB and tell the children you are going to watch a youtube clip about the animal (perhaps use one which features Bindi and Bob Irwin).
Discuss the clip:
Have children demonstrate how the animal moves, eats, communicates, etc. As you discuss the clip, write any new vocab up on the IWB and explain/discuss (eg marsupial, habitat, pouch).
For EAL/D students, model the structure of each sentence as you say it and things like pronouns and plurals:
Read a picture book about the animal (phonological awareness, model reading, vocab, engagement) and discuss: what new things did we learn about the animal? Add any new vocab to the IWB list.
Have one or more large, colour images of the animal to stick on the IWB. Write the animal's name next to or near the picture and sound it out with the children.
Suggested picture books:
Diary of a Wombat
Edward the Emu
Discuss the clip:
- what did you see?
- what did you notice?
- what is the animal like?
- what does it eat?
- how does it move?
- where does it live?
