Lesson Ideas:
1. Home and Away (refugees), For Every Child a Better Place (human rights) and Dust (famine). Confronting texts. Copy pages and get the kids to analyse the text and illustrations in small groups then present to class and class add to reflections.
2. Used Home and Away with Year 6. Focused on the visual literacy and the powerful use of imagery, colour and aspect to convey meaning and emotions. Year 6 kids thought it was for little kids and then after realised they needed to pay more attention to other details in picture books.
3. I'm teaching yr 4 and this term we are planning a unit on "other points of view" with discussion around people from other nations migrating to Australia.
4. I teach a year 7 class and we do an entire unit on the refugee perspective for English. I use The Island and Anh Do's The Happiest Refugee (the picture book and the grown up version). We then do literature circles using different novels: Boy Overboard, Girl Underground, Parvanna, Parvanna's Journey. The assessment is writing a collection of diary entries. It's up there with my favourite units to teach!
5. I read Home and Away with grade 5 and 6 after reading the novel Mahtab's story by Libby Gleeson. My class were really engaged and reflected on the visual literacy of this book as well.
